AKRONRapist convictedAKRON: A Summit County jury convicted an Akron man of rape and sexual battery for numerous incidents reported to police in 2009, authorities said.Anthony Wilder, 46, will be sentenced at 1 p.m. Aug. 29 by Common Pleas Judge Paul Gallagher. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.Prosecutors said the victim reported to police in February 2009 that Wilder had been sexually abusing her for years. Wilder was living with the victim’s mother for many years and had acted as a stepfather, prosecutors said.Investigators linked Wilder to the crimes through DNA evidence on the victim’s clothing.Gyro shop robbedAKRON: A gunman robbed a gyro shop on East Exchange Street.The man went inside Euro Gyro at 444 E. Exchange St. just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, pointed a gun at a worker and demanded money. Once the 34-year-old male worker opened the cash register, the gunman took the entire drawer. He fled with about $200 and ran toward Spicer Street.The gunman was carrying a black semiautomatic pistol with a laser sight. He was described as a black male in his 20s, wearing a baseball cap with what could be a Yankees emblem, blue and yellow plaid shorts and a blue shirt.Anyone with information is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490. Anonymous tips may be left at http://akronohio.gov/asp/tip.html.Court date for StittAKRON: Aaron Stitt is scheduled to appear in court next week for a hearing before a Summit County judge to determine if he violated his probation in a 2010 felony case.The hearing is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday in Common Pleas Judge Thomas A. Teodosio’s court.Stitt, 24, was being held in the county jail without bond for allegedly violating his probation in connection with a guilty plea to the crime of receiving stolen property.When he was 13, Stitt fatally shot his father, Dennis Stitt, as he slept on a couch in the living room of their Akron home.Subsequent psychological evaluations of the teen found him to be a victim of battered child syndrome.Jonathan Sinn, Stitt’s lawyer, said Teodosio will decide whether to send Stitt to prison for violating probation, or to keep him on probation with restrictive terms. Bath Road.The group is interested in the stream that flows through western Summit County to the Cuyahoga River.Call 330-666-4007 for more information.COVENTRY TOWNSHIPLucky 777 break-inCOVENTRY TWP.: A Summit County grand jury indicted an Akron man Tuesday for breaking into Lucky 777 in Coventry Township last month.Garic Ellis, 25, is charged with breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony.Someone broke into the gambling parlor on South Arlington Road at 1:30 a.m. July 21 and unsuccessfully tried to get into the cash drawer, the Sheriff’s Office said.Ellis later was identified as a suspect and arrested July 25 while at the business playing games, authorities said.CAMPAIGN TRAILDemocrats to meetAKRON: The Summit County Progressive Democrats PAC will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Meeting Room 2 of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. Betty Sutton and judicial candidate Stephen Dyer, who is running for a seat on Barberton Municipal Court.There also will be an update from We Are Ohio on Senate Bill 5 (limiting collective bargaining for public union employees) and an update on House Bill 194 (election guidelines).The meeting is free to the public.CUYAHOGA COUNTYI-77 North closingThe Ohio Department of Transportation and Karvo Paving Co. will close Interstate 77 northbound between Interstate 480 and Interstate 490 in Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland from 7 p.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday for major paving work.The final asphalt will be placed on the five-mile stretch in only 27 hours. If only nightly lane closures had been used, it could have taken up to two weeks, ODOT said.Detours will be posted and law enforcement officers will assist in directing motorists.Motorists attending events at Jacobs Pavilion and Quicken Loans Arena on Friday and Saturday should use alternate routes.In the coming weeks, crews will perform a similar operation on I-77 southbound in the same location.The $9.3 million resurfacing project is scheduled to be complete in October.HARTVILLENew councilmanHARTVILLE: The chairman of the village’s Board of Zoning Appeals will be council’s newest member.Mayor Edsel Tucker told Village Council on Tuesday night that David Hubbell has agreed to replace Ronald Beltz, who resigned in June.Hubbell, 48, of South Prospect Avenue, will serve the remainder of Beltz’s term, which expires at the end of this year.Tucker said Hubbell, who did not attend Tuesday’s council meeting, has not taken the oath of office. The mayor asked him to serve because no one applied to fill the vacancy.In other action, council scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. today at Village Hall. They will consider legislation to set elected officials’ salaries through 2015, establish a sewer reserve fund and authorize manpower for various departments.MEDINABand ticketsMEDINA: The U.S. Air Force Prism Band Ensemble will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Medina Performing Arts Center Main Stage at 851 Weymouth Road.Tickets for the performance are available through the mayor’s office at Medina City Hall at 132 N. North cantonFire damage setNORTH CANTON: North Canton fire officials have set the damage at nearly $900,000 for a Tuesday fire at a multiunit residential dwelling on Sherbrook Circle Northeast.A passer-by called 911 around 3 p.m. after noticing the building’s roof was on fire.Fire officials say the blaze caused extensive damage to numerous units in the building. The fire was brought under control in about an hour.Firefighters rescued several cats. No injuries were reported.
