A tribute to firefighters and police officers. Tickets $10, safety forces $7.50.FairlawnAnnual Sept. 11 memorial ceremony 8:30 a.m. at 3800 Embassy Parkway. It features the Fairlawn Fire Department, a special flag raising and reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Speakers are Edward Schepp, a lieutenant with the Fairlawn Fire Department, and Bill Caplan, a partner with the law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs. Service of Remembrance, noon to 12:30 p.m., at the War Veterans Memorial at Bitzer Park (southeast corner of the square). Police Chief Steve Wilder and Fire Chief John Bacon will honor first responders and all who lost their lives on 9/11. Reflections with a panel discussion, 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Hoover High School auditorium, 525 Seventh St. NE. The Rev. Steve Stultz Costello, president of North Canton Ministerial Association, Rabbi Jon Adland of Temple Israel of Canton and Dr. Gregory Miller of Malone University are among the panelists. Renewal Street Fair and Celebrate Our Diversity Picnic, 3 to 6 p.m., on Dogwood Street. Street booths, dance teams and a public art show are featured. Bring picnic food and beverages.SundayAkron• University of Akron Hospitality Club will host a 9/11 Memorial Brunch, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Crystal Room Restaurant in Gallucci Hall, 200 E. Exchange St. It features smoked salmon, herb-roasted chicken, French toast, oatmeal, sausage links and bacon, salads and desserts as well as an omelet station. Half of the proceeds will benefit the Summit County Chaplaincy Program, which provides counseling to law enforcement officials. The remainder will help fund educational events and events for the Hospitality Club. Price is $17.95 for supporters, $13.95 for seniors and free for ages 5 and younger. Scott McKinney, local resident and American Red Cross disaster volunteer, will reflect on his experiences at ground zero.Brimfield TownshipLocal police and fire departments will be honored along with military active duty and veterans at a 10:30 a.m. service at Faith United Methodist Church, 1235 Tallmadge Road. Safety forces vehicles and officers, music by A Chorus For a Cause with guest community singers, acknowledgment of Blue Star and Gold Star mothers, video message from U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, and a candlelight remembrance. Family activities to precede the memorial will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial Walk at 5 p.m. The program is organized by Stark County Safety Forces and Coming Together Stark County.Cuyahoga FallsPublic observance ceremony 12:30 p.m. at Falls River Square Amphitheater stage. Led by the Rev. David Baker of First United Methodist Church, it will include the Woodridge High School marching band and Cuyahoga Falls Community Chorus, under the direction of Ted Shure.GreenRemembrance ceremony and concert 4 p.m. at Green Veterans Memorial Park. Open to the public, spectators free.Stow9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, 2 to 3:30 p.m., Stow-Munroe Falls High School, Music by Stow Symphony Orchestra and youth choirs from Indian Trail and Woodland elementary schools. Speakers include Stow Mayor Karen Fritschel, Stow-Munroe Falls High School student Victoria Pace and Command Sgt. Major Albert W. Whatmough of the Ohio National Guard. Light refreshments will follow.StreetsboroThe new Firefighters Memorial will be unveiled in a dedication program at 2 p.m. It is located between the fire department and City Hall at 9184 state Route 43. TwinsburgGathering of Remembrance, 2 p.m., at Perici Amphitheatre, 10260 Ravenna Road, behind Chamberlin Middle School. Presented by Twinsburg Public Library and the Western Reserve Community Band, which will perform a special concert. Rain location is Twinsburg High School.Sept. 18 GreenA survivor of the World Trade Center will speak at 6 p.m., at Parkside Church Green Campus, 4520 S. Arlington Road. George Sleigh was on the 91st floor of the North Tower when the jet crashed into the building just above his floor. He and his co-workers were eventually evacuated. He will relate how he was able to move on from the ordeal. The event is free and child care will be provided.
